Methodology
The PFPI uses a chained matched-pairs methodology modelled on how national statistics agencies compute CPI elementary aggregates:
- Every product's median observed price is computed per calendar month from TrendCompare's hourly price history.
- For each consecutive month pair, only products observed in both months are matched β new arrivals and delisted items are excluded so assortment changes don't masquerade as price changes.
- The month-over-month change is the 2%-trimmed geometric mean of per-product price ratios (a Jevons index) β robust to listing errors and couture outliers, yet sensitive when most prices are sticky.
- Monthly changes are chained from the base period, March 2026 = 100.
Scope cells with fewer than 300 matched products in a month are treated as insufficient and carried flat. Ratios outside 0.1Γβ10Γ are dropped as data errors. All data comes from TrendCompare's own scraping of official brand websites β no third-party feeds.
