8 September 2026 · English
Our tracker currently holds 148,843 items confirmed on a brand's own site within the past seven days. 91,384 of them carry a genuine discount — more than three in five.
One further number changes what that means.
32,956
Of those 91,384 discounted items, only 32,956 are in stock. The remaining 58,428 — 64% of the entire sale — cannot be bought. They are listed, they are priced, and they are gone.
The gap widens at the deep end:
- 50% off or more: 41,014 items
- Of those, in stock: 10,162
- Roughly one in four.
This is not deception — but it is not an accident either
We are not claiming brands deliberately display sold-out stock. The cheapest and most wanted pieces go first; what lingers is what lingers. That is ordinary retail.
The effect on a shopper is the same regardless of intent. When a "70% off" banner sends you to a landing page, the odds are that most of what you scroll past is the 64% that has already gone, not the 36% that remains.
How to shop against it
Do not start at the sale page. Filter for your size and for stock first, then sort by discount. Every TrendCompare brand listing shows only what our last pass actually found — and where an item has not been confirmed in seven days, we say so on the page rather than leaving you to guess.
Data: TrendCompare 22-brand hourly tracker. Figures count only products confirmed on the brand's own site within the last 7 days, and every discount is capped at 3x to keep inflated "was" prices out of the averages. Full methodology.
