The prices are the story. Gul Ahmed's new cambric shalwar is arriving at Rs 983 and Rs 1,112. A block-printed shirt and trouser set sits at Rs 3,000.

That is a different picture from 1 September, when new stock was landing in the Rs 3,500–5,000 band. The cheapest end is filling up now — cambric and basic separates around the thousand-rupee mark.

Two readings are possible. Either the brands are using cheap everyday stock to bring back the shopper who has stopped buying at higher prices — or these are the small pieces that precede a bigger winter launch, and the real collection is still to come.

Today's limits: Laam (97 hours), Khaadi (71) and Sapphire (29) are all stale, so none of the three carries a claim today. They are three of the largest brands, which means today's figures describe a smaller slice of the market than usual — worth remembering when comparing against the days either side.
