Laam Jumped by 8,964 in Our Tracker — That Was Our Fix, Not Laam

The easiest story to write today would have been: "Laam added 8,964 items in three days — the biggest drop in the market." The number is right. The story would have been wrong.

What happened

Laam has 107,692 product pages. Until 11 September our scraper restarted from the beginning every hour and never got past the first 200 — three separate faults compounding into one. On 11 September it was fixed. The scraper then began reading the rest of the catalogue, and Laam in our tracker went from 94,859 to 103,823.

Those 8,964 items were already on Laam. We were seeing them for the first time.

Where it shows

• Laam items appear as "new" on /new-arrivals. They are not.
• On 9 September we wrote "Laam, 941 new items" — the same problem at a smaller scale.
• The "1% sold out" we printed for Laam in the 10 September table was accurate — for the 200 items we could see.

What the full view shows

There is a benefit to seeing the whole catalogue. Among the 8,964 are 802 distinct sellers, prices from Rs. 99 to Rs. 180,000, and 62 sherwanis, 13 of them above a lakh. Wedding-season Laam is in our tracker in full — for the first time.

Why we are writing this

Our job is to report what happened in the market. When our own tool produces a number the market did not, correcting it is also our job — even when the number looks good for us.
