A strange picture, 22,650 items sitting at half price and barely moving, while the brands load new stock at roughly the same rate.

The stock figures in this story were wrong, and the fault was ours. Our scraper only updates what it can see on a brand's collection pages. When an item sells out and drops off those pages, the row is never revisited and stays flagged in stock. By 22 August that had reached 100,103 rows, 46,164 of which had not been seen in over ninety days.

Today's contradiction is worth sitting with. On one side, 22,650 items at half price, of which 27 sold in a day. On the other, the brands have not slowed their new stock at all, more than 1,800 new pieces in the past 48 hours, every one at full price.

How does that work? Because for the brands the old stock has stopped being a problem to solve, it has been filed under "sale" and they have moved on. The new season is taking its shelf space, and the old stock is sliding to the back, cheap or not.
There is an opportunity in that for shoppers. While the brands' attention is on new stock, the cheap old stock sits there uncontested, so there is no rush, but the choice of size and colour thins a little each day. And if warehouse pressure builds in September, that 22,650 is exactly where the next cut lands.
